Now that the worst of winter is behind us, it’s time to give your car some tender loving care. Road salt is highly corrosive and can easily rust metal components, speed up any existing rust and scratch up your paint job. Your car’s undercarriage faces the biggest risks because it must survive the snow, salt and sand that is kicked up by the tires. Needless the say, it’s a good idea to wash the grime off.
Every car owner should get a wash after winter’s worst, but some car aficionados may wish for the best treatment. Whatever your preference, start with a tunnel wash that includes an undercarriage power rinse. This rids your car of the harmful salt and road chemicals. If you want a more thorough wash, you can pay for a full-service detail or you can do your own at home for a faction of the price.
Start on the interior by first wiping off the dashboard and control panels. Clean your seats (according to manufacturer instructions) by using an upholstery or leather cleaner. If you have allergies, you may want to dip a Q-tip in cleaner and wipe down the interior of the air vents to remove dust and pollen. Then vacuum out your car, including the areas underneath the floor mats.
Once the inside is done, dilute car shampoo into a bucket of warm water. Rinse your car and then start scrubbing from top to bottom so the dirt can run down. Rinse again and dry with microfiber towels. Wipe down your windows, mirrors and lights with glass cleaner, remembering to roll down the windows to clear away that inch or two of grime that builds up on top.
After months of snow and filth, it’s nice to see your bright and shiny car once again. Not to mention, the $15 to $150 dollars you spend on a good car wash seems like just pennies compared to the thousands of dollars you may face if salt has a chance to set in and do some real damage.
