Use Drug Use Policies to Minimize Workers' Compensation Claims

road sign with the words risk management straight aheadEmployers take on risk when they hire an employee. There is no way to know how that employee will interact with, treat, or engage others in the workplace. Having a drug policy may offer some support to companies who need to minimize risks on the job. While it may not prevent use, it does create a framework for the company to minimize risk. This may help reduce workers’ compensation insurance claims.

How Drug Policies Can Help

A drug policy is a type of rule that defines the steps employers can take if an employee shows up for work under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Imagine a common scenario. A worker shows up for work with alcohol on his or her breath. The employee walks into the machine room, engages the equipment, and loses his finger due to a mistake. Could it be the alcohol put him at a higher risk for accidents?

If a drug policy is in place, the employer could stop the employee at the door and require them to go to a clinic for a test. By doing this before the employee starts, the employer minimizes risks on the job floor. Drug policies like this keep companies safe. They minimize workers’ compensation insurance claims as a result.

Keeping Other Employees Safe

Other employees benefit, too. An employee who is high puts other workers at risk. He or she may become hostile or angry on the job. The employee may fail to pay attention to safety rules, and someone else gets hurt. With a drug policy, the employer can require the employee to leave the premise for a drug screening. What could you do to help your employees remain safe? Drug policies may offer a bit of help.

Making Wise Decisions About Drug Policies

It is important for companies to work within state laws regarding drug testing. Some areas may restrict when and how this process happens. Many companies need to install new drug policies as recreational and medical marijuana use grows. Companies need to focus on rules pertaining to use on the clock. Even the use of prescription medications can cause a worker to be less ready for the job.

With the help of drug policies, workers' compensation insurance claims for injuries may fall. Organizations should work with their attorneys along with their human resource department to create such policies. Doing so could help minimize many of the risks of on the job injury.
