JumpstartEveryone has car trouble from time to time, ranging from simple to extreme. One of the most common occurrences is having a battery go dead. If you ever have this issue and do not have roadside assistance under your car insurance policy, you may have to get a jumpstart from someone else in the vicinity.

In certain circumstances, your auto insurer may send someone to give you a jumpstart, so you can drive to a location where you can purchase and install a new battery. But in the event you have to do it yourself, here's how it's done:
  • You will need a set of jumper cables.
  • Make sure there is another vehicle in the area with a strong battery.
  • Ask the driver to park their car by yours, with the cars'; hoods close together. Leave the car with the good battery running.
  • Take one side of the jumper cables and connect the red lead to the positive terminal of the working battery. Do the same on both cars.
  • Take the other side and connect the black negative lead to the negative terminal of the working battery. Do the same on both cars.
  • After about a minute or two, start the inoperative car.
  • Leave both cars running for a bit, then disconnect the jumper cables in reverse.
This should give the car enough juice to stay on while you travel to the next destination. In a number of cases, the battery will have enough juice to stay operative for a few days. But it's always a good thing to go and get it checked.

If the car does not start, chances are it is a more serious problem. Check with your insurance agent to make sure you have roadside assistance in your car insurance policy. This helps give you peace of mind and can alleviate situations where there is no one nearby to help.

With the right policy, your insurance can help you out in a pinch. Call First Insurance Group at (800) 511-2892 for more information on Kentucky car insurance.
